RAPIDS Smart Card System
The RAPIDS system containing smart card technology was introduced in the Hawaii area for use exclusively by PERSUPPDET Pearl Harbor customers. Originally, the cards were issued as MARC (Multi Technology Access Reader Card). In 1998 MARC's were renamed SMART and continues to be evaluated for multiple uses within the Department of Defense. Each SMART card contains a computer chip that is capable of holding a significant amount of data. Through the use of a PIN (Personal Identification Number) selected by the member, access is limited to the member and entitlements are protected. While there are many possible future uses for SMART cards, currently, the cards are used to access galley and meal entitlements.
