Captain Michel is a native of Brandon, Florida and a 1989 graduate from the United States Naval Academy.

Captain Michel enlisted in the United States Navy in 1982, where he served as a nuclear trained Machinist Mate aboard the USS Stonewall Jackson (SSBN-634 Gold Crew) and made two deployments, earning his Silver Dolphins in 1985.  In 1985 he was selected to attend the United States Naval Academy and in 1987 he was accepted for an exchange program with the United States Air Force Academy. He was commissioned in 1989 and received his wings 1990. 

Captain Michel joined the DUSTY DOGS of HS-7 in 1991 and deployed with HS-7 aboard USS JOHN F KENNEDY (CV-67) in support of PROVIDE COMFORT and PROVIDE PROMISE.  In 1994 Captain Michel transferred to the SEA HORSES of HS-1 where he served as a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) flight instructor in the SH-3 SEA KING and the SH-60F SEAHAWK. During this tour he earned an MBA from Jacksonville University and was 1995 Instructor Pilot of the Year.

Captain Michel reported to the USS INCHON (MCS 12) in 1997 where he served as Navigator and made deployments to the North Sea in support of BLUE HARRIER in 1997 and the Adriatic Sea in support of KOSOVO relief operations in 1999.  During this tour he was picked as the 1999 SURFLANT Ship Handler of the Year.

In 1999 Captain Michel attended the AIR COMMAND and STAFF COLLEGE in Montgomery, Alabama and earned a Masters Degree in Military Operational Art and Science.

Captain Michel reported to the DUSTY DOGS of HS-7 in 2000, serving as Administrative, Training, and Operations Officer, and deploying aboard USS HARRY S TRUMAN (CVN-75) in 2000 and 2003 in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.

From 2003 through 2005, Captain Michel was the Operations Officer for COMHSWINGLANT.

In 2006 Captain Michel reported to the WORLD FAMOUS DRAGONSLAYERS of HS-11 where he served as Executive and Commanding Officer and made two back to back combat deployments onboard USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65) between May 2006 and December 2007 supporting OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM while flying missions supporting British Forces in Basra, Iraq. Over this two year period the DRAGONSLAYERS were deployed or detached for 491 days. During his XO/CO tour HS-11 won back to back Battle “E’s” in 2006 and 2007 and they were the Navy’s nominee for the 2007 SECDEF Phoenix Award. In 2007 Captain Michel won the COMHSCWINGLANT Leadership Award and was one of six finalists for the Stockdale Award.

In 2008 Captain Michel moved to Lisbon, Portugal and reported to NATO JOINT FORCES COMMAND LISBON where he was the Deputy CJOC Director and the Deputy Joint Assessments Branch Head for NATO RESPONSE FORCE 13 and 14 and NATO’s Counter-Piracy OPERATION OCEAN SHIELD. In 2010 Captain Michel deployed to NSA BAHRAIN as the NATO Counter-Piracy Liaison Officer to NAVCENT and the COALITION MARITIME FORCES.

In 2011 Captain Michel reported to the United States Naval Academy where he served as the Director of Midshipmen Character Development and Training.

 During his career, Captain Michel has accumulated over 3,000 hours flying in helicopters and fixed wing aircraft.  His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, and various other personal and unit awards.
